Mr. Abayomi Suberu, WAEC's branch comptroller for Kano/Jigawa zone, said that the schools were de-registered for two years.
11 of the sanctioned schools are based in Kano, while one is in Jigawa. According to him, 8 of the affected schools were privately-owned. 97 schools got off with warning letters. This, according to him is “due largely to complaints WAEC received on their nefarious activities.
Speaking at an event in Kano to mark the 65th anniversary of WAEC, he said:
“Examination malpractice has remained a source of distraction for WAEC, with the spread of rogue websites across the sub-region. The scourge has persisted in all member countries and the council has continued to utilise every available means and opportunity to discourage the die-hard perpetrators of the malaise.
“We remain resolute in our resolve to fight examination malpractice. We are appealing to teachers to help us to stop examination malpractice. Our pupils must shun it.
“We think we are helping them but in the future, most of them will regret it. Let us not destroy the future of our children.”

According to Suberu, WAEC is working on strategies to beat malpractice. They only "recently introduced self-sealed, tamper-proof, polymer envelop for packing of essay and objectives scripts,’’ he said.
